So, Word on the Water - The London Bookbarge is a small independent bookshop situated on a 1920s Dutch Barge which, for the last four years, has been moving along the canals of London, offering curated, affordable books, live jazz on our roof stage, poetry slams, book launches, friendly cats, a kindly dog called Star and a woodburning stove. Despite being run by three confused and slightly chaotic middle-aged bargees, we have somehow managed to be listed in the Guardian and Buzzfeed as one of the ten best independent bookshops in the world.
After a year of campaigning, and with the astonishing support of literally thousands of book- and bookshop-lovers from all over the globe, we have been offered a permanent home at Granary Square in King's Cross, a home mooring that should secure the floating bookshop's future and make it part of London's cultural scene for many years to come. We are really excited and relieved, but it's going to cost us £4000 to realise this dream and keep the shop from closure. (We know Paddy says £3500 in the video, but we also have to factor in fees on here!)
