Andreas Franke, renowned Austrian advertising photographer and avid diver explored and photographed the shipwreck USS Vandenberg in 2010. This strange place with its mysterious emptiness was to haunt his mind. To him the shipwreck, a place almost surrealistically alive, appeard as a entirely unique stage. Basing on this idea Andreas Franke started one of the most spectacualr projects of contemporary photo art: A submarine dream world exhibition.
He decided to invigorate it by surreal scenes. He took studio photos and superimposed them on the absurd, peerless, submarine background formed by the ship and its ambiance. It is no man's land, a sunken, forgotten world hovering somewhere between the past and the present. A world covered with diffuse, hazy marine veils, a gloomy world which is as confusing as it is fascinating.
This was the world Andreas Franke wanted to share with the one above. Soon a befitting gallery was found. To exhibit his work he had the perfect art gallery: 24.27 N, 81.44 W. 130 feet under sea surface on the USS Vandenberg.
The following series is his new project "Stavronikita". For more information about artworks of Andreas Franke, please visit his website.
