Helix Nebula from Michele R Gutlove

Installed in the Irving Schwartz Public Library, in El Paso, Texas, this new sculpture of glass artist Michele R Gutlove created an impression of the helix nebula within the observatory-like entry lobby. The helix nebula, is 700 light-years, or 4 quadrillion miles, from Earth. Planetary nebulae, consisting of expanding glowing ionized gas ejected from old red giant stars, are short-lived, lasting tens of thousands of years, compared to a typical stellar lifetime of several billion years. The sculpture changes with the light and seasons.

Over the last two decades, Michele R Gutlove (Studio GH) has created many commissioned works in places including hospitals, universities and community centers across the United States. [Vimeo, Short Bio, Website, Facebook]
