From Poacher to Protector Initiative

With the "Poacher to Protector" Initiative the Maio Biodiversity Foundation (FMB) plan to give sea turtle poachers an opportunity for change, by training and employing them as sea turtle protectors on Maio Island, Cape Verde, Africa. In this campaign we wish to employ as many poachers as possible. Over the years the Maio Biodiversity Foundation (FMB) has realised that directly involving local people in turtle guarding is one of the most effective ways to stop poaching. The main cause of poaching in Maio is unemployment, and the best way to stop this is by giving them a financial alternative. In the past we have also learned that these poachers can create strong links to turtles and get passionate about them once they are involved in working for their protection. Dozens of cases of "poachers to protectors" have shown us that after a seasons work protecting turtles, seeing the mothers nest and the babies hatch, these ex-poachers fall in love with this ancient species and become the best spokespeople for turtle conservation, telling others in their community that they will never be able to kill a turtle again.
