Bite Counter

A watch-like gadget that measures food intake is being developed by researchers at South Carolina’s Clemson University. The Bite Counter counts the amount of bites taken per day by measuring subtle wrist motions to the mouth. One hundred bites a day appears to be the optimal amount for weight loss, according to the scientists.

Researchers tracked the number of bites of 77 people over two weeks, according to a study published in March in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  The average number of calories per bite was 17 for men and 11 for women, which if 100 bites per day is the optimal amount, makes the daily caloric target 1,700 for men and 1,100 for women. These figures represent a low-calorie diet according to the National Institute of Health.
